I first stumbled on FnK FancY completely by chance in late June after listening to his remix of Levantine’s “Thunderbird.” I probably played it 30 times the night I first heard it; the bassline still baffles me. That distinct style stuck with me and, if you’ve been following PB&J this summer, Mr. FancY has been featured on nearly every new piece of music he releases, with good reason. Since June, he’s released 3 mixes, his ‘Elegance EP,’ and five originals/remixes. He’s a busy man with a genuine  passion for mixing in such a style that provides a HUGE breath of fresh air to the funk and house music scene. Get to know him better in our interview and download his free “Yo Soy Latino” Mix below, because you’re sure hear his name more ubiquitously in the EDM field in the near future.

Interview

What led to the mix and the production of your own songs? Did you have any specific influence as you started out?
FF:  Yes, I had influences. It all started the first time I heard House music. Once when I was 8 years and saw the video on TV “Get Get Down” by Paul Johnson and then saw “Around the World” by Daft Punk, which followed that video. From that day I did not stop singing these tunes; as I got older still investigating house music, I realized that the style of music I liked was the Disco / Funky House. Then when I was 15 I dreamed of learning how to make funky house and a friend told me that he had learned to produce and so on. I got to watching tutorials on youtube. I learned the basics and then I went on my own from there.

What is FnK FancY like when he is not behind a mixer making music? What do you do in your spare time?
FF: I used to practice kickboxing but stopped because I was lacking time for practice, my studies and my girlfriend. Now I have more free time to continue mixing and producing. Sometimes my free time is free too (sometimes) hahahaha

Since you play exclusively in Chile, what is the craziest thing you’ve seen while playing a live show?
FF:  The craziest thing I’ve seen in a live show was when DJ “Genius” wanted to climb up his set, stepped wrong and landed on the table, his mixer and computer – The party ends hahahahaha!

This summer has treated you well. You have had plenty of new material released – What’s next for FnK FancY?
FF:  For now I want to experience more use of synthesizers to achieve a sound with more “bang” and explore other styles but I do not intend to get out of the funky house – just see it as a way to continue learning about production and other things…and the good thing about my material is that my ‘Elegance’ EP was taken up by Darth Ravers Records – I’m very confident so far the record label is paying off…and as I said before I want to explore new styles .. but Fancy Fnk will not go so far away from funky house hahaha

If you could, what other artists would you collaborate with and why?
FF: I’d love to collaborate with Hot Pink Delorean – we would meet with a fresh sound, they go from electro to house “as if it’s nothing.” And I’d love my productions to have to same force as HPD. I would see a collaboration with HPD as an experience and try to everything possible about their sound, synths, etc.

You incorporate a very funky style in your tracks. Do you ever think you should have been born in the 1970s? 1980s?
FF: Not really. I like having been born in 1993 because I feel part of the resurrection of House music, yet I feel responsible for House to remain the same House with “samples.” Also for that reason I would love be a proponent of something new to the house scene in both Latin America and the world
Would you feasibly consider playing a show in the United States, specifically Orlando?
FF: ABSOLUTELY! The truth is I have never left Chile (my home country) and I would love to know this beautiful experience of travel and knowing the people who like me music…the paperwork would be very exciting, traveling, meeting people from another country and speaking another language! I find it very amazing, definitely an experience not soon forget! Besides, I have been told Orlando is a very beautiful city!!
