Savoy @ The Fillmore [Review]

14 Nov

Location: Fillmore Theater, Denver Colorado. It’s November 11th, 2011 and the clock on my phone just flipped over to 11:11 pm when the hook of ‘Zombie Nation’ starts to build pace and volume as the lights brighten up the Booth.  Two minutes in, the crowd of 3,700 is getting chills down their spine with anticipation.  Then, right on time, the bass drops, the lasers fire up and the crowd goes nuts!

Throughout the week leading up to last friday, the Trio was blowing up all Social Media Outlets with  ”#111111″. I was in full preparation for this show to blow me away, but what I saw, I cannot honestly say I was prepared for. If you include watching them play as a garage band in the basement of a now defunct Fraternity, then this was my 7th time seeing them live; and goddamn was it the best by far. With Ben and Gray mixing and emceeing like seasoned vets to get the crowd in a frenzy, Mike was able to build up the drops masterfully on the drums. Every track played – from the many new premieres that no one knew, to the bangers that they’re all known for – had everyone in the venue stomping on the floor with their hands in the air.  I’m in the process of getting the setlist but these are the tracks that I recognized: “Zombie Nation (hook only)”; “Shut it Down” -Pitbull; “We No Speak Americano (Savoy Remix)” – Yolanda Be Cool; “Happy Violence” [not sure what remix] – Dada Life; “Dancing in the Dark (Savoy DanceSex Remix)” – Dev; “Cry (Just a little)” – Bingo Players; “Dirty Dancer” (Savoy Remix); “Get Static”; “DIY”; “I’m in Need”; brand new release “Kili”; some Wiz; and the Encore was a huge remix of Empire of the Sun’s “We are the People”.

In addition to the set being a journey of mass proportions from electro-house classic sing alongs to Dubstep brain melters, the lightshow was unmatched by any show I’ve seen this fall. Being prepped, through Savoy’s facebook, with the warning “Bring Sunglasses”, no one could fully prepare themselves for the lights that were about to be thrust upon them. With 5 full spectrum lasers paired nicely with six moving cans and a podium that was covered in high intensity white bulbs, every drop was made that much more dramatic when every light was set ablaze.

The Rundown:

Pros: Started at the exact minute they promised (11:11), absolutely Banging setlist, 3700 dance partners and an unbelievable light show.

Cons:  Two hours is not enough Savoy! Drinks were $12…might as well been at a hockey game.

Final Thoughts: if these guys are in your area, it is a requirement for you to go. Just watch out for the young guns thinking they are hotshit in full rave festival gear. Now check these videos below!
