Last weekend was pretty major for any person with a social life: New Year’s Eve weekend. But in addition to all the festivities, champagne, and stupid party hats, I was able to attend three shows at Pacha from Thursday with Afrojack and Wall Records, NYE with Laidback Luke and friends, and Alesso with Jockamo Beatz, Franklin. R, Derek Rusinak, and DAVE KIM in the basement. So, it was pretty clear that I had a lot on my plate. But on Friday night I spent my time in the basement jamming to Dave Kim’s set as he returned to Pacha for a second time. As I expected, Dave came out with an absolute vengeance on the tables. As he kicked the night off with Deadmau5′s classic, Reward is Cheese more people poured into the basement and Dave matched the intensity level in his music. Check out the full review after the jump along with his ENTIRE set from the night and track list!

Pulling songs from his library at random from the likes of Fedde, Dmitiri Vegas & Like Mike, Kim Fai, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, and Tiesto, this eclectic mix was totally driving the crowd nuts. As I stood from afar and snapped pictures the entire night I noticed a sense of unity among the crowd as the bodies seamlessly flowed to every rhythmic beat that came through the speakers. Never had I seen the basement so filled to capacity with eager party goers than on this night.

With such a techy beginning, the crowd was put directly into “club mode”. And with the use of several other heavy-bass filled tracks, Dave transitioned into a more uplifting/ big room section of his mix that seemed to force everyone’s hands in the air as he worked the buildup. By the time DK had reached the middle of his set, the entire crowd was in his palm. Even as Alesso had begun his set on the main floor, the basement crowd refused to die down as heavy dancers and true fans of EDM gravitated to the smooth and almost effortless transitions that made this set epic.

Because his set was so cohesive, myself and everyone in the booth couldn’t believe that it wasn’t premeditated. We all eagerly looked on as he stumbled through his library to pick the next song to match the mood of the crowd. And without fail, he succeeded every-single-time. And as a girl from the crowd slapped her hands on the glass front to the booth exclaiming “I love you” with her eyes closed, we all chuckled at what appeared to be a direct sign of pure crowd satisfaction. Using Haley’s airy vocals from Don’t Stop Dancing Girl as the perfect ending piece, DK transferred the wheels of steal onto Franklin R. Accolades, praise and random hi-fives were all part of the aftermath of this legendary set.

In a world where anyone can go buy DJ equipment, plug in their laptop and call themselves a DJ, Dave Kim represents a small percetange of this generation that still holds onto the true passion for the music and has the ear to effectively put together an eclectic set with ease. Now, you try and find me those same qualities in your average, dime-store DJ. Nothing? Thought so!
