Recently I had the pleasure of sitting down with house funk producer, innovator and DJ Ashley Jones, better known as Treasure Fingers. Coming from the versatile family at Fool’s Gold Records, Fingers has made a name for himself for several years, but most recently with original tracks like ‘Take My Hand’ and his remix of ‘Call It What You Want’ by Foster The People, along with excellent remixes of Chromeo, Groove Armada, Little Boots, Tensnake and more. We turn the spotlight on him inside with a few comprehensive questions and leave you with his latest December Mix he cooked up for the fellas at MixMag. Enjoy!

Interview:

TF: I started really young about 12 or 13 years old, with just a 4track, drum machine and whatever else I could find that made noise. Mostly hiphop stuff, but that transformed into triphop and IDM, then drum & bass, house & whatever else came along. Probably my earliest influences to actually start producing were all the west coast rap dudes: Dre, Ant Banks, DJ Quik, etc. As far as dance music goes, I’d say Armand Van Helden, Thomas Bangalter, Bob Sinclar, Photek, Ed Rush & Optical, Technical Itch have been some of my inspirations. Probably my two all-time favorite producers are Squarepusher and Roger Troutman; wildly different, but both amazing in their own right.

PB&J: From ‘Take My Hand’ to ‘Rooftop Revival’ to ‘It’s Love’ – you have a varying range of funkyness in each track. How would you describe your sound?
TF: Um, funky? I usually just call it feel good house music – always funky, always uplifting.

PB&J: What has been your experience with Fool’s Gold Rec and what is your favorite part?
TF: It’s been great to be a part of that crew. It’s a very diverse group, everyone kills it at what they do. Really loving the new Danny Brown stuff as of late. I think my fav part is just playing the Fools Gold parties at the music conferences each year, it’s usually the only time that all of us are in one place at the same time, good fellowship!

PB&J: Who are your favorite artists to follow, work with and see in concert?
TF: Follow – Diplo, he’s a maniac and just never stops. I don’t know when he sleeps to be honest. It’s challenging to even attempt to keep up with him so it’s a bit of an inspiration to follow his career.
Work with – George Clinton or Bootsy Collins. I would die ever given the opportunity.
See in concert – Mono is probably my favorite band to see live. If you’ve never seen them, please take ear plugs, they will 100% fill every single frequency in the room no matter how big or small it is.

TF: Bad sources
I moved to brooklyn in 2008. But I did recently move back to Atlanta this past fall haha. I love New York and think it’s the greatest city on Earth, but for some reason I feel more creative in Atlanta. I can’t explain it really, but my music output was a lot lower in NYC than when I lived down south. I just now got my new studio set up, so hopefully I’ll have a lot of new stuff out this year. (Update: my fact-checking intern has been fired).

PB&J: If you don’t mind us asking, what mixing equipment do you go with when playing a live set?
TF: I use Pioneer CDJ1000 or 2000s, DJM800 Mixer, Traktor Scratch Pro & Sennheiser HD-25 headphones

PB&J: What are your thoughts on the SOPA and Protect IP bills being debated in Congress right this very moment?
TF: I’m a bit embarrassed because I’m not 100% in the know, but from the little I’ve read the past few weeks, they seem very bad. There’s tons of opposition already so I’m hoping they’ll have a hard time passing. I thought the GoDaddy boycott was great. That reminds me that I need to get around to changing my domains over.

PB&J: If we give you a free PB&J tanktop, wouldja wear it?
TF: Depends on the weather

PB&J: Any forthcoming collaborations? Thoughts of producing a full album? Conquering world hunger? What’s in store for 2012?
TF: I’ve got a collab EP coming out jan 25th on Defected Records with Malente. I’ve been working on a few tunes with Codes as well. We have a single slated for Nervous Records this spring and should have a few more out following that. I have another solo single “Rooftop Revival” (music video directly below) that will be out this march on Scion A/V with some amazing remixes. Other than that, I’m just making music then trying to figure out where it best fits. Hopefully a full length will come together soon

Do I wish Treasure Fingers had made an exclusive mix of us? Of course. Does that mean it’s gonna happen? No. He’s a busy man and I can respect that. Regardless, I invite you to listen to his latest mix for MixMag to get a sense of his style. You can find a full tracklist Here.
