QULINEZ: PB&J Exclusive Interview + ‘Troll’ (Original Mix) [SIZE Records]

9 Feb

It’s always humbling to hear a new talent before they really blow up, and that’s exactly what we have on our hands today. In 2006, two good friends hailing from Sweden, Alexander Lager & Johannes Gustafsson began producing music together, in 2011 they formed their new project: Qulinez.

Although it’s not necessarily a secret, Sweden is taking over Electronic Dance Music and now you can add this duo to the list. Skipping forward to 2012, ‘Troll’ marks Qulinez’s debut release on Steve Angello’s label imprint: Size Records - don’t overlook this big room smash that’s coupled with electro elements and beautifully placed slider synths. Today Qulinez let the ‘Troll’ out of it’s cage via Beatport and we’re already looking for casualties from speakers all around the world. The progressive buildup in ‘Troll’ adds to some of the mystery of the track before it’s massive drop.

Fortunately for you all, we had the opportunity to get in touch with both Alexander and Johannes for an exclusive interview surrounding their debut release. We discuss their inspirations, what it’s like to be signed to Steve Angello’s label, the hype behind ‘Troll’ and several other interesting topics. Check out the song below, purchase it from Beatport here, and then hit the jump to see our in-depth interview with these Swedish upstarts!

-INTERVIEW-
So you guys are fairly new to the game, but you’ve been fans of EDM for a quite some time. What do you think of the growth of EDM and where it’s headed?
QLWe love it! It feels like EDM is rapidly taking over the music world!

_________________________________________________________________________________________

It seems that you both grew up with a strong musical interest. How did you two meet and begin producing together?  And how did the idea for Qulinez come about?

QL: We have been friends along time. Both of us really love dance music and we both agreed that we should do something together. We started about 7 years ago and since then we have stuck together. We talked about changing our style to something new and embarking on a brand new project. Then we started to make our new style of music and that is pretty much how we began.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

What kind of studio set up do you guys have?

QL: Computer, speakers and we work in FL Studio hahahaha

_________________________________________________________________________________________

How did Steve Angello hear of your demo? And how did it feel when you found out ‘Troll’ had been signed to Size Records?

QL: We sent our demo “Troll” to him and it took some long-awaited months before we got answer. We were like ” OOOHHH HOW CAN THIS BE POSSIBLE!!!!” we were jumping around like 10 year old babies =)

_________________________________________________________________________________________

We see that you guys have four unreleased original tracks. What can we expect from some of these future releases and when will we be hearing previews?

QL: We are prety sure which track we want to release but unfortunately we can’t tell you anything about it yet. Sorry! I think we will put up previews of the new track when it gets nearer the time. =)

It seems like all the great EDM is coming from Sweden these days, what’s the secret to success out there?

QL: Haha we’ve been asked this kind of question many times before :P We think that SHM have opened up a lot of doors for Swedish Dj`s, raising awareness about the dance talent that is coming out of Sweden at the moment.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Where did the inspiration and name for ‘Troll’ come from?
QL: We was searching for a short, simple but strong name so it was “Troll”

_________________________________________________________________________________________

When can we expect a tour from you two? I know our readers would love to see you in the US live sometime in 2012!

QL: Yeah we’re working on it =) hopefully it will be soon

_________________________________________________________________________________________

What kind of equipment do you use when producing and DJing? And also, what is one piece of advice that you’d give to aspiring producers?

QL: Computers , speakers and FL studio. When we DJ we use Pioneer CDJ-2000′s

_________________________________________________________________________________________

We’ve been hearing ‘Troll’ everywhere from Alesso, Cazzette, Swedish House Mafia at MSG, and recently, Hardwell. How does it feel to hear your track supported so heavily by some of the world’s biggest producers and DJ’s?

QL: It´s insane we cant believe it yet. It has gained interest so quickly, so i dont think we have realized the full extent of it yet!

Hardwell playing ‘Troll’

_________________________________________________________________________________________

For our readers that are unfamiliar, how would you guys describe your sound?
QL: We have a very unique sound, so its difficult to explain but we will try: Our music is Chock-full of slider synths, progressive builds and fog horns.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

If we sent you guys an official PB&J tank top or hoodie, would guys you wear it?

QL: Ofc no problem =)

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Name one venue each that you would love to play this year?

Johannes:WMC (Winter Music Conference)

Alex: WMC or Tomorrowland

_________________________________________________________________________________________

When you guys aren’t in the studio cranking out hits, what do you for fun?
QL: We are always hanging out with friends and partying! =)
